Trent Green was no shmuck
He made the Pro-Bowl in 2004 (Gonzalez's best season) and still holds the Chiefs franchise record for most passing yards from that season.

No, he wasn't Tom Brady, but he still threw for 4600 yards that year and 27 TDs (which were really good in 2004). Gonzalez basically accounted for 27% of Green's yards and 26% of his TDs. On the flip side, Gronk accounted for 25% of Brady's yards, but a staggering 44% of his TDs. Brady knew that he could throw it to Gronk anywhere in the end zone and he would catch it. If he had amazing players like Welker and Hernandez around him, they would syphon off TDs from Gronk. But that just didn't happen.

I really liked Gonzalez and I am somewhat of a Chiefs fan. I watched him his whole career and never thought to myself "How do you stop this guy?" He just consistently performed at a really high level. But Gronk was just unstoppable.
