Time to make some decisions about the real mission of university.
CURRENT PHILOSOPHY: Have a place where white mormon elite can learn and grow. Then, send them out to recruit more of the same.
WHAT IT COULD BE: Gather diverse, but qualified students, and intermingle with LDS environment. As part of the college experience,, with high standards. Both become stronger as a result and the traditional LDS boundaries and weirdness start to fade. This means more members, expanding demographics, and a more vibrant community. Goal should be to have a higher % of non-LDS students.
Face reality: .002% of the world's population in Mormon, and it is shrinking fast. If you only count active LDS, it more likely < .001%.
Funny thing is, the above concept actually fits better with the current "mission" of the school than the way they are actually running it.
My point is: Why not use the university as a way to expand demographics, DURING the college experience. Instead, they are choosing to delay that until AFGER college. Which means, it never happens.
