I'm surprising my father with a trip to northern France early June. I want to take him around on the d'day sites. I know there are many guided tours but most of them seem to be booked up already for the 6th.

Should I just wait to take the guided tour until a few days later or would it be easy enough to rent a car or use public transportation to get to the sites that day? I don't think there will be any more guided tours available on that day that I can find on the internet.
