It was years later that I started to find out about some the things he does.
I did know that he was a Naval Intelligence Office (reserve). There would be times when he be at work on one day, and the next, he would be gone, with no explanation. If you called his phone line (days before email) you would get a message from him indicating that he would be "out of the office for an unspecified period of time". Usually, the vmail recording was very bad and you could tell that he was either leaving it via a ship-to-shore line, or some other device with less than perfect reception.
I'm sure there are a lot of stories he could tell----I'm pretty sure his "Naval Intelligence" work involved a lot more than sitting in an office on a ship somewhere reading intercepted messages. He also spoke, or had a working knowledge, of several languages (some of which I had never heard of).
He was also quiet, thoughtful, and one of the kindest people I've ever met. Unless, of course, you were his enemy. In which case, I'm pretty sure he could probably kill you with his bare hands before you even knew he was there.
