There are a few issues with Durant just leaving and signing with the Knicks this offseason. First, the problem for the Knicks & KD is that the Warriors can give KD a 5yr/$221M deal while the Knicks can only offer 4yr/$164M. That is a ton of cash to leave on the table if you are Durant. The Warriors issue is that even if Durant leaves, they have no cap space to sign a new small forward if they give Klay Thompson a max deal. This would leave them with a very thin roster and limited options offensively.

So, if Durant really wants to leave the Warriors to play in New York it would be in the best interest of both sides to work out a deal. With a sign & trade, Durant would get his supermax deal, the Knicks would get Durant, and the Warriors would get a young player to fill KD's shoes at the SF spot.
