If it's a good story it will work. If it's stupid, it won't.
There were a lot of people concerned about Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. But it was a great story and was told well.
Most bad acting jobs are in poorly written movies.
Christian Bale as Batman worked because his trilogy was well written. George Clooney and Val Kilmer didn't because those were dumb stories.
