products are true generic. However Aldi does extensive blind consumer taste tests before making a generic.
The products MUST have as high of a customer rating as the name brand. For instance, the generic Doritos are different than the name brand. However a super large group of consumers, in a blind test, liked the Aldi chips as much as they did the Doritos. The Aldi chips are crispier and thinner. I can tell the difference, but frankly I like them as much as Doritos. I am not saying the Aldi chips are better, but they certainly aren't worse. They are just slightly different. Obviously a die hard Dorito fan would disagree with me.
The blind taste test is one of the reasons that Aldi doesn't sell generic cola, they just can't get it to match Coke or Pepsi in blind customer testing.
