I had just barely left on my mission before this game, so I never got to see it live. Watching the recap of the game got me pumped.
Some things really stuck out to me though:
1. The confidence. The BYU players and coaching staff looked and acted like they truly believed they were going to win. The defense got hyped up and were not intimidated by the #3 team in the country. Special teams coverage was great. Max Hall walking off the field at half time looked like he was saying something about how they own that field or something. Regardless of what he said, it was nice to see a QB who had confidence he would lead the team to beat the #3 team in the country (ZW looks like he may have some of this same confidence).
2. Our tight ends. George and Pitta made some big plays...so awesome seeing our big guys actively involved in the offense. This seems like it's an important part of BYU's identity. That and making use of powerful RB's.
3. I feel like at the beginning of every season our team should make a tradition of watching highlight reels from some of BYU's biggest wins, just like this one. You get a room full of your players who watch these huge wins in BYU's history and they see that this is the BYU tradition. BYU can and has beat big teams. We're not just one of the little guys. So when you go up against a big team, you believe you can win because BYU has done this many times. Secondly, it's up to the team this year to add another huge marquee win to that highlight reel. How good would it feel to know that you were part of a huge BYU win that the team will watch at the beginning of the season every year? You're part of BYU history.
Got me amped for the football season. I hope BYU gets their swagger back and plays with the confidence our teams have had in the past!
