for the people that he loves. They just end up getting hurt by it. So he decides he can't interact with them anymore.

So maybe he should have just died when he drove the boat into the hurricane. But Dexter is pretty good as surviving car/boat accidents as seen multiple times throughout the show. Him being a lumberjack isn't important, but obviously he needs to move and start a new life far away from Miami.
