But whether you hold him responsible or not, there was certainly tension generated by the team performance those seasons.

Most color commentators that I can think of are likely to not rock the boat much at all. Maybe they sacrifice a little bit of charisma, but have a very likeable persona (RBoone, Hubie Brown, Romo, MLyons, Collinsworth).
