He had some truly awful moments as the BYU QB. Most of those were subsequent to injury but not all--Cody Hoffman wiiiide open vs. Notre Dame--sheesh. I'm not saying he wasn't a D-1 caliber athlete or football player. I never believed he had a D-1 caliber arm. That said, the fact that he remained on the field in impaired condition and with some of the performances he had speaks to him having been known for some pretty compelling traits--leadership, charisma, intelligence....I'm sure there's at least one more, for some reason it just won't come to me ; )
Some of those qualities should be things he'll be able to put on display in his new role. Even among his critics, I've heard of very few people who've been around Nelson and genuinely don't like the guy for any substantive reason. I still default to Kuresa and perhaps Jensen and Gurney as my favorites on Criddle's show, but I've always like Riley when he's on.
I think he'll do very well and look forward to listening to him.
