Well, this got me thinking and second guessing myself, so
I did a quick Internet query and the first thing that came up was:



Which says yes advantage can be given in the box. I refereed 15 years ago and I don't remember a prohibition against advantage in the box then, but then again laws and their interpretation are being tweaked continuously. Like I distinctly remember the directive out from FIFA to give the benefit of the doubt to the attacker in offside situations. But now they call it way more strictly, benefiting the defense.

Remember also that they now have VAR coming into play at the highest levels, which means the VAR people in the booth is constantly checking and has communication with the head ref on the field. The effect of this is refs are letting some things go in the box, or offside possibilities in the attacking 3rd, to let the attacking play play out. If there was something it can be reviewed now if it involves goals or penalties in the box.
