I live in Tampa, if you want to enjoy the beaches St. Pete or Clearwater are your best bet. Staying near the airport (Westshore) there are some nice restaurants, but closer to some tough neighborhoods. If you head about 10 minutes east/south you are in downtown South Tampa, lots to do - can walk to a lot. I would avoid Seminole Heights & Town & Country.
