It is a contractual thing, but looking at the NY6 and the G5 teams that got in:
2014: Boise State (11-2) - BYU probably doesn't get an at large bid for a NY6 game with this record.
2015: Houston (12-1) - Depending on our strength of schedule we probably get an at large bid to a NY6 bowl and are even in the playoff discussion, but we don't get a playoff berth.
2016: Western Michigan (13-0) - With this record we definitely get an at large bid to a NY6 bowl and depending on the strength of schedule we are in the discussion for a playoff spot and possibly get one if there are enough 1-2 loss teams and our strength of schedule is good enough.
2017: UCF (12-0) - See 2016
2018: UCF (12-0) - See 2016 and 2017

You have to take into account that BYU's strength of schedule is almost always stronger than any G5 schedule, so we have an advantage. If we have the same record as a G5 team, ours will be more impressive, sometimes significantly so. We do have some great schedules coming up.
