My take on the recent Nick Emery findings: what’s the big deal?
Like many of you, over the weekend I was surprised to see the tribune revisit the Emery investigation, and absolutely confused at the outcry.
It is completely reasonable for me to believe that a “booster” would notice some holes in Nicks shoes from the bleachers, and try to help the young man out with giving him $200 for sneakers. We know Nike and the university don’t give these young student athletes nearly enough gear, and heaven forbid Nick break through his shoe like Zion Williamson! The Cougars’ national championship hopes would be dashed!
On another note, Who among us hasn’t gone through a tough breakup while at BYU? I know I did, and also had someone foot the bill for a round of golf and some steak afterwords at Riverside Country Club? These student athletes arguably should be paid anyways, and in my opinion some golf and food at Riverside should be included with scholarship offers.
Again, I just simply don’t understand the outrage.. I know after my tough breakups while at the Y, my older brother took control of my finances, and footed the bill for several international trips so that I could recover my mental health and get back to myself. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t experienced the same, that’s what older brothers are for! What else does a 21 year old do to get over someone, besides visiting concerts of their favorite bands coast to coast? Furthermore, I think most college students can afford to take their wife to New York to see some broadway plays and take in the food/sights, and flights to Germany are relatively cheap anyways! What college student doesn’t take their wife on these types of getaways? This is what college students do!
And finally; a lot has been made about the infamous Volkswagen Jetta.. how else is poor Nick supposed to get to practice if nobody leases him a car? Walk? These poor students don’t make nearly enough to get an Uber to practice, so that’s not it. Of course Nick needed a car!
It’s clear to me the Trib has a personal vendetta against the Y. They are obviously jealous of BYU and Nick, and the clear success that is to be in coming year.
