I don't have a scientific answer other than alchohol is an effective irritant. Reticulated python keepers tend to keep whiskey or vodka nearby in case one of their massive snakes get's a hold of them. I've used hand sanitizer before with similar results to get a small kingsnake to stop trying to swallow my finger.
