As a parent of one of the best athletes in the state I’ve ignored those people..
You just can’t pay attention to them. Sure the percentages are low but those guys that do become college and pro level athletes obviously exist and they can come from anywhere. To me it is a matter of just making sure you have options. Two years ago my son was positive he would be a college baseball player. He had multiple baseball offers and the situation at his HS in football was that he wouldn’t get to start until his Sr year and getting a college football scholarship as a one year starter, especially at QB, isn’t very likely. My wife wanted him to quit playing football and he thought about it as well. I insisted he keep playing for multiple reasons but the biggest was to keep his options open because you just don’t know what’s going to happen.

Long story short he had one of the best season for a qb in Utah HS history and is now going to college on a football scholarship. If we’d listened to the naysayers about the time and money we out into him and his athletics growing up it may have never turned out like this for him. And I get that it as probably more his natural talent than all the money we spent on private instruction in both baseball and football but the truth is there is no way to know how it would have turned if we hadn’t done what we did and we know how it did turn out so we regret none of it. Worth every penny and worth every bit of time. Plus it was a bunch of fun, made a lot of friends, got to know a lot of kids that are now also moving up, honestly just all around great way to have our son grow up.

Don’t listen to the negative input, if a kid is good enough it will happen for him provided parents help to provide opportunities. I would never discourage anyone from trying.
