That's simply your interpretation of their motivation. You may be right with
Some. You're wrong with others. You also assume that people don't say these things to the people they are talking about. Also, some people have a hard time verbalizing stuff and find it easier to write. Better than nothing.
Look, it's not my style, either. I don't do them, I generally stop reading them when I realize what they are and I wouldn't get all excited if someone wrote one about me. But you're definitely overthinking this
