This coziness to DeFord despite DeFord's mostly ridiculous anti-soccer attitude and writing. Nothing against DeFord's quality or prestige as a general sports writer, but his soccer opinions were generally insulting and ridiculous. At least Wahl could have pushed back on his mentor harder and debated him.

Maybe Wahl picked up that smug and in your face attitude from DeFord, because DeFord was just that.
