My counterargument.
1. Hummels might be an upgrade for Dortmund, but he was going to be 4th on the depth chart for Bayern, behind Hernandez, Sule and Pavard. You have to remember Bayern aren't holding still. Their biggest weakness last year was on defense in the form of Boateng and Hummels. They are unloading one of those problems to Dortmund and are bringing in two better players. Boateng didn't see much playing time this year and he won't see nearly any next year. Likely, Boateng will be sold.

2. The concerns about Ribery, Robben, Lahm and Schweinsteiger seem misplaced sine none of them have made a signficant impact for two seasons. Lahm and Schweinsteiger were gone the last two seasons. Ribery and Robben haven't featured in the offense either of the last two seasons. Boateng we already addressed. Bayern have moved on past these players already 2 seasons ago and still beat Dortmund both years. They have upgraded strongly at defense.

3. Further, Bayern have worked hard to improve the wings. Coman is excellent and will be elite if he stays healthy. Gnabry isn't my favorite, but I would take him over Brandt or T. Hazard. Further, Bayern will bring in one more winger. Their target is Sane. If they get Sane, he will be a massive shot and I won't worry about the losses of Ribery and Robben anymore.

4. Muller is still valuable. A lot of Bayern fans rave about him and point to him as a glue guy that helps the whole offense work. I don't see this as much. Like you, I think his best years are gone and he is fading. Still, he won't be enough to make a difference.

Bayern will be better on defense than Dormund at every position. At forward, Dortmund have nothing compared to Lewy and haven't had anything comparable since they had Lewy. Reus and Sancho are fantastic. They are really the only players that I covet at Dortmund. I already told you my thoughts on Brandt. I think Bayern have upgraded just as Dortmund has, but better. If they get Sane, then it won't even be arguable in my mind.

Still, it will be interesting to see.
