With the 50th anniversary of the moon landing coming up
My first thought was Neil Armstrong. But I think, instead, I'll go with Jim Lovell — the first (of 3) Americans to go to the moon (just not to the surface), then went back to the moon on the ill-fated Apollo 13 but led the crew in getting back to Earth safely.
