The development is likely better overseas. (Although I imagine this varies depending on the league and team).
Perhaps the bigger question is whether going overseas early vs. staying at BYU will get you a better shot with an NBA team. That is much more of question mark for me.
I still contend that Childs made the better choice for him. He clearly wasn't going to get a great shot at catching on with an NBA team this year. That could easily change if BYU has a good year and makes a bit of a splash in the NCAAs.
