lines....(google just informed me they are considered "collateral ancestors"). I guess saying "direct descendant" just clarifies that you're strictly tracing parent and child relationships and disregarding any collateral ancestors.

Why do people ask if you are a “direct descendant”? Is it possible to be a descendant but not a direct descendant?

You can be a descendant but not blood lineage for example a great-grandmother
