Technically? No. There is no distinction when using that term.
The vagaries people are clarifying are terms such as “ancestor” or “relative”.
Descendant implies direct parent-child lineage.

Why do people ask if you are a “direct descendant”? Is it possible to be a descendant but not a direct descendant?

In my mind, it's the same, but some view aunts and uncles as part of ancestral

You can be a descendant but not blood lineage for example a great-grandmother
