Davies also only averaged 6 rpg and less than 1 block per game. Pope & Burgess are known for their abilities to develop bigs. Davies often credits Pope for his development and Pope wasn't on staff until Davies jr/Sr yrs. So I think Baxter will have a similar impact/development, especially defensively, as Davies soph season. Baxter likely won't ave 10-11 ppg like Davies but he won't need to with Yoeli & 2 other proven scorers(TJ & Toolson-3 if Emery can regain some of his frosh/soph abilities).
On the surface having Davies and K Collingsworth with Jimmer sounds highly impressive but those 2 were far less impressive/impactful that year(especially frosh KC). J Emery was the only other player on that team that really made a major impact as he was a Sr, played excellent defense, and was a proven scorer(driving & outside/3s).
Hartstock was decent that yr(8ppg/6rpg), by BYU standards, but nothing the likes of Saljaas and/or Harding can't duplicate.
My main excitement for this teams potential is largely due to Yoeli, TJ & Toolson, all of which are seasoned seniors(something Pope has cited makes a big difference). Then add guys like Baxter and Emery, Harding, Saljaas and possibly Wade...that's alot of seasoned talent (by BYU standards).
As for winning a game or 2(Sweet 16) in the Tournament. Jimmer did it without Davies, who was easily the 3rd best player on the team that year(& best inside player by far) so I don't think it's much of a stretch to suggest this veteran and talented team can win a tourney game or two.
Another way to look at it; what other past BYU teams had as much talent that were also all Sr's as this BYU team? What team had 3 or more as good or better than Yoeli, TJ & Toolson (& Emery if he can find his frosh/soph game)? All four of those guys have already had MULTIPLE seasons with double digit scoring averages. That might be a feat that's never been done before at BYU?
I'm thinking back w/ M Smith, Haws and Chatman is the only one with clearly better, experienced top 3-4?
