Labyrinth Canyon can be done in a recreational kayak...even a paddle board, assuming you carry the proper gear.

So it's not like the leader selected a dangerous section of river (it was still dumb to take homemade equipment that long, in that remote a spot, at high water), but at least some thought went into it.
