I had a great-great-grandfather that was a stoneworker, and when the railroad was being built across the US, the Church assigned him to help the railroads build some stone bridges, etc — any place in Northern Utah that they needed a skilled mason. On one trip, he took my great-grandfather with him (my recollection is he was under 10), which of course was a great adventure. It is also interesting talking about the travel through what is now Davis County, at the time still a wilderness, and how long it took (seems like they had to camp a night) to get to where he needed to work.
Unfortunately, we don't have writings from my great-great-grandfather to know how he felt about it.
