I don't doubt or dispute any of that. You aren't listening to what I'm saying.
He is a Hall of Famer. He is clearly very smart at many things. He knows many aspects of baseball better than almost anyone on this earth. His perspective can be so interesting because of those types of things that he knows.


And yet, he has a huge gap in his knowledge about the sport because he appears to have stopped trying to learn since he retired. Everything is talking about how they used to do it, which can be interesting, but we have learned so much more. Analytics have taught us so much about player evaluation, player value, and baseball strategy. Current front offices base most of their decisions around the analytics that power these areas. And Smoltz ignored all of it. I've give several examples in this thread. As long as he continues to have a willful blindspot to one of the biggest aspects of the modern game, he is letting everyone that understands wOBA, advanced defensive stats, and time through the order penalties to just be that much smarter than him. And it's his fault.
