Most of California's power comes from coal fired plants in states like Utah, Colorado, etc. California's famed "wind farms" in Tehachapi, Altamont Pass, and Palm Springs frequently sit idle for months at a time due to bird migrations and weather factors. Many of the turbines in these wind farms sit permanently idle as they are no longer operable.
