coach, but because a dysfunctional organization.
BYU botched P5 inclusion twice, and it hurt. Fans still crave relevance and success, but because of the the missed P5 opportunity, and the fact that the rival has had so much success, those days are long gone. Fans insist on P5 opponents, without P5 resources. On top of that, a rigid (an archaic) honor code combined with difficult academics hurt recruiting even more.
BYU is punching above its weight, hanging on to this memory of what the program used to be, and slowly slipping into irrelevance. It's not pretty. And there is nothing any single coach can do to change any of this. I think we are fortunate to have Kalani. He is a great man who loves BYU and is the perfect fit. There is nobody better tailored for this job, and I hope he is around for a long time. He should be extended and shouldn't need to worry about job security for a few years unless he is averaging less than 3 or 4 wins per year.
