Not if they had actually taken more 3s and practiced them

There were a lot of guys back then that had the talent to shoot like today's player — able to make the 3 pt shot with guys draped all over them. Look at the 3P% of Stockton or Kiki Vandeweghe or some of the other very efficient mid range shooters. Late in their career, they started shooting a much, MUCH higher percentage of 3s. Why? Because they started practicing them.

I watched Vandeweghe practice one offseason morning in 1987 after he made something ridiculous like 50% of his 3s the year before. He trotted corner to corner turning and shooting. After about 20 minutes, I counted fewer than 10 missed shots. Almost every shot was off the back iron and in so the ball returned right to him as he ran for the other corner. Now shooting in rhythm like that isn't a game situation, but it is still the most phenomenal shooting display I have ever seen.

I thought the next season he was going to revolutionize the game shooting corner threes. Instead, he went back to his old game and shot about one a game. I think now that was simply a cardio exercise for him and he never had any intention of changing his playing style. I bet he wishes he had launched a lot more 3s in his career. He might be in the Hall of Fame.
