Battery voltage is affected by temperature. Lower temperatures result in slightly lower battery voltage. Your house is cooler at night than it is during the day, so as the battery approaches the threshold of going bad, it's going to happen at night rather than during the day.

The only way around it is to proactively change your batteries at least every year so they never get close.
