Generally people are escorted out if the the company they are going to work for is a competitor.
Your current company doesn't want to give two weeks to potentially take files, speak with clients, etc. If it isn't a competitor or in a different industry altogether, then generally they'll take your two weeks to help with succession planning/responsibility pass off.

That may be different per company, but that is how we do it.
