The long-term trend in Latin America has been toward free markets & economic
liberalization, and away from socialism, with only a couple of exceptions. Almost every country in the region is more-free market-oriented today than it was in the 1970s or early ‘80s, with Venezuela being the main (only?) exception.

However, it is true that populists (like Cristina Fernandez) have somewhat surprisingly won some big elections in the region in recent years behind a wave of anti-free-market sentiment from the working class — as just happened in the United States also, to be fair.
