That is how it was reported. He did not have sufficient clothing or supplies as he was meeting them same day.
Impressive to get through that many chilly nights with little food or clothing (unless he was eating that horse!).
I know that range is quite rugged, but the basin they were in is only one mile wide. Most basins in the bitterroots are very long and narrow. Unless he was hopping over rugged passes for some reason and basin hopping I just don’t understand where he was during these past 5 days.
