A labmate once made an astute observation about the moral decay of society
He thought someone should start collecting data and write a paper about how the following two indicators are the best indicators of the moral decay of society:
1) the voluntary return of carts to the cart corral
2) the ability to allow yourself to still feel shamed by your dentist for not flossing properly
These two metric gauge self-awareness of selfishness and proper response to authoritative corrections.
