This is a pretty big disagreement among LDS historians. But yes, several
LDS historians will say that no one ever claimed to see the plates in real life. Only with "spiritual eyes" or when taken up by the spirit.
And the Witness accounts in the front of the BOM are, IIRC, not signed by any witnesses, but are instead written in Oliver's handwriting.

A few innacuracies. Like the missionaries are at the mtc before learning where they are going on their missions.
