As pointed out before, BYU was Eastern Michigan in terms of relevance until Lavell. We know what has happened since.
BYU’s success is at least explainable. A great coach with unique scheme at a place that is the Flagship institution for a faith that has millions of members in the U.S.
But Boise? My goodness. More remote than Provo. No recruiting base to speak of. Not a ton of money. Small stadium.
They have leveraged a series of really good coaches that has created a mind blowing run that is going into its 3rd decade of crazy success in FBS.
From 1999-2018:
Boise has 217 wins and a 83% win percentage both best in FBS.
They won at least 10 games 16 times. Lowest win total during this stretch is 8.
They have a 22-12 record against teams that have won 10 games or more. That is the best winning percentage in FBS against such competition. Only 3 other teams are .500 or better.
Since first being ranked in the AP in 2002 they have made at least 1 appearance in the AP poll every year since, 147 weeks total, 57 in the top 10.
