Instead of initiating with a buy, you initiate with a sell. Then you have to
close out the sell with a buy. You're not necessarily tied to another investor on the buy and sell.
The shares that you sell short are shares that are owned by the brokerage firm that you're selling through. They own shares of all these large companies to facilitate trading.
