Watching the movie last night, the spent quite a bit of time talking about this era.
They mentioned Alabama resining integration (not signing a black player until 1964) and Oklahoma and Nebraska building their program by recruiting black athletes sooner.
Wyoming was doing the same things as OU and Nebraska and had a powerhouse ranked team in the 60s.
SJSU had boycotted a game vs BYU in 1968 or so and then in 1969 14 Wyoming players wanted to wear arm bands to protest the church’s priesthood and temple policy. Wyoming’s coach kicked them all off the team and Wyoming just about hasn’t been ranked since.
BYU never banned black athletes from coming, but we sure didn’t offer a lot for them for a long time either.
Tommy Hudspeth recruited one African American athlete to BYU in 1970, but even after that, how many were on the 1984 team?
Anyway, if one of the central themes of the 150 documentary was how college football reflects America and racial integration, there was a pretty big story BYU could have part of, but I’m just as glad they didn’t go over it again on such a large platform.
