Beest 3rd String
I've been thinking about this scenario lately. Here's my experience now that my
kids are mostly grown.
I was athletic in high school. Mom tried to make me take piano lessons, but I had no passion and quit by 3rd grade.
I have six children. The youngest are 18 and getting ready for college. Except for one son who played JV BB one year in high school, none of my kids really got the athletic gene. They are coordinated and all, but not super athletic. However, all of them started playing strings in the 5th grade as part of the music curriculum. All of them continued playing in orchestras until they graduated from high school, except one who quit after Jr. high (didn't have the passion). They played cello (4), violin (1), and viola (1).
The interesting thing is that once they hit 14 years old or so, each one of them started getting interested in other instruments. Now, they also play: drums (1), guitar (3) — electric and acoustic, bass guitar (2), ukulele (3). And a couple of them mess around on the piano/keyboards. As they showed interest and dedication to other instruments I would buy them for them (cheapos at first, then higher quality as they proved they were doing well and going to stick with it).

All 6 of them will be in town for two days next week and, in preparation, a few weeks ago they made a set list of about 10 songs that they committed to practicing on their own, and then are going to play together (alternative-type rock).

Yes, there are days when I look back and think it would have been fun to watch them play in sports, but I'm certain that I enjoy them playing music together even more. I'm really looking forward to the jam session they are going to have next week. I really enjoy hearing them play their orchestra instruments for special numbers in church too. It's something they will be able to do the rest of their lives regardless of bad backs, or creaky knees. I thoroughly enjoy having one of my boys pull out the acoustic guitar and noodle around for me. Makes me happy.
