Rumors can be true, and often have some truth to them. But your friend likely didn’t repeat it exactly like he heard it, and you are likely not repeating it 100% how you heard it (telephone effect). Is the meaning/idea of the conversation changed, I don’t know. But a rumor nonetheless.
