2018 BYU had top 10 offense on short drives (starting at own 40 or better)& 95th
ranked offense on long drives (starting at own 20 or worse)

We scored 4.78 points per drive on short drives (this was 10th in the nation). That means if BYU had 3 drives starting at the 40 or better we could expect scoring 2 touchdowns on the three drives.

In contrast, for long drives we were 1.08 points per drive. This means if we have 7 drives starting inside our 20 we could only expect to score 1 touchdown.

For medium drives, we were 1.84 (ranked 77th) points per drive. This means we needed a little under four drives to score 1 touchdown.

I don't know what the reason is but this Offense seems to be built to thrive on short fields and is just not good at long drives. Early indications this year point towards this not changing.

So you might not think there's a big difference between starting at the 25 or the 45 but there is statistically a large difference for all teams but that is even more pronounced for BYU.
