In large part likely because they are national heroes
with a lot of pressure to perform. It makes sense to take more pride when you’re one of few representatives and heralded as an icon to some degree.
Also - I think/wish there was one cyclical championship for the best of the best, not two. Right now there’s this and the Olympics, and evidently that’s too much to ask of our best players. Make the Olympics U-23 like soccer.
