Lavell is not really recognized as developing the Air Raid. Hal Mumme and Leach copied Lavell’s offense and advanced it
Into something new. That offense is the Air Raid. The BYU offense was the father of the Air Raid. But it was more of an innovative college variant of the West Coast offense.

Lavell was instrumental in teaching them the offense basics though. Particularly the mesh route concept. That was the genesis of the Air Raid. Both Mumme and Leach spent a lot of time at BYU practices and on BYU’s campus learning from byu’s coaches as they developed their philosophy.

It’s a cool story. Lavell was a great guy. But Mumme used the stuff he learned from Lavell to beat us in 1985 when he was an UTEP.
