Hmm. I guess if you just like hard rock better than thrash, that's cool. But
Metallica wasn't ever a "great" hard rock band. They were a fantastic thrash band.
IMO, their hard rock era (starting with black album) is okay, not terrible, but not amazing either. Their thrash era (everything up to and including Justice) is some of the best that genre ever produced.
