I get the former, not the latter
Through the Never and The Struggle Within has fast picking and double bass.
Just a Bullet Away and The End of the Line are more recent ones you may like as well.
Plenty of stuff on the first four albums isn't thrash metal.
In the end, the fan beef, by and large, is because of the rise of popularity of Metallica through commercialism. It's all good.
