My cousin is head legal counsel for BYU and he told me about this once. I'll have to ask him again for the details, but
they tried to force us to prove our use of the block Y was visible enough and early enough that they couldn't prevent us from using it with a more recent trademark.
IIRC we basically sent them a 1910's era photo of the Y on the mountain and that was the end of it.
