When I was in elementary school in the 70’s we made Indian outfits...
Out of brown paper grocery bags, basically you’d cut arm holes in them, a neck hole, cut them up the middle on one side to form it into a vest, then cut a fringe along the bottom to make an Indian vest.

Then we’d make an Indian drum out of an oatmeal container, the round kind, by decorating with whatever design we thought was an Indian looking design.

And then if course we’d make a headband with some feathers and strips of paper.

We also made pilgrim outfits similarly, tall hats, some sort of jacket, buckled to tape to our shoes.

Basically it was a project to help us learn about thanksgiving. I probably did it almost every year I was in elementary school. And of course no one was offended by it then, and the purpose wasn’t racist by any means.

Time has sure changed the way things are perceived.
