2010 vs. 2020 regular season football schedules = Independence is better.
This is BYU's regular season schedule for next year.
In eight, maybe nine, of the games, the opponent makes the game more attractive.
We could even add North Alabama to that, since they're a bit of an unknown.
I see this schedule and I think, "Oh, yeah. Overall, I want to watch that schedule."

Even if BYU loses a game, there's an interesting game scheduled for the next week, so there's always something to look forward to.
The majority of the teams on the schedule are prominent enough that they will add an extra motivating factor.
And there's always the outside chance that BYU will run the table and get into the playoff picture.

2020 BYU Regular Season Football Schedule
Sep. 5 – at Utah
Sep. 12 – Michigan State
Sep. 19 – at Arizona State
Sep. 26 – at Minnesota
Oct. 2 – Utah State
Oct. 10 – Missouri
Oct. 17 – Houston
Oct. 25 – at Northern Illinois
Nov. 7 – at Boise State
Nov. 14 – San Diego State
Nov. 21 – North Alabama
Nov. 28 – at Stanford

Ten years prior to the 2020 season, this was BYU's schedule. It was BYU's final year in the MWC.
In three of the games, the opponent makes the game more attractive.
I see this schedule and I think, "Hmmm. Washington, Florida State, and TCU could be entertaining, even if BYU loses, but the rest of the schedule looks really dull, even if BYU wins. I don't really have any reason to care about that schedule."

Even if BYU doesn't lose even a single game, there's no interesting game scheduled for the next week, so there's never much to look forward to.
If the players aren't strong-minded enough to view every game as something to play for, there's not much to play for even if BYU wins. A MWC championship trophy is nothing to get excited about, and there's no realistic chance that a G5 team getting into the playoff would be anything other than an extremely rare anomaly.

2010 BYU Regular Season Football Schedule
Sep. 4 - Washington
Sep. 11 - Air Force
Sep. 18 - Florida State
Sep. 25 - Nevada
Oct. 1 - Utah State
Oct. 9 - San Diego State
Oct. 16 - TCU
Oct. 23 - Wyoming
Nov. 6 - UNLV
Nov. 13 - Colorado State
Nov. 20 - New Mexico
Nov. 27 - Utah

I want to watch interesting, entertaining football, regardless of whether BYU wins.
Even if BYU wins, I have no desire to watch boring games against boring opponents.

I like football, not meaningless trophies.
